Applications of hydrodynamic coupling with double fluid units：

(1) Automobile

Hydraulic couplings were used in early automotive semi-automatic transmissions and automatic transmissions. The pump wheel of the hydraulic coupler is connected with the flywheel of the engine, and the power is transmitted from the crankshaft of the engine. In some cases, the coupling is strictly a part of the flywheel, in which case the hydrodynamic coupling is also called the hydrodynamic flywheel. The turbine is coupled to the input shaft of the transmission. The liquid circulates between the impeller and the turbine, so that the torque is transmitted from the engine to the transmission to drive the vehicle forward. In this respect, a hydrodynamic coupling acts very much like a mechanical clutch in a manual transmission. Since the hydraulic coupling cannot change the magnitude of the torque, it has been replaced by the torque converter.
