The Brief Introduction of the Disc Couplings

2025-11-17 15:21

Recently, the demand for diaphragm couplings has been increasing. Let's learn about what a diaphragm coupling is.

The disc couplings are the flexible couplings that uses one or more thin, flexible metallic discs (or diaphragms) to transmit torque and accommodate misalignment between two connected shafts. Unlike gear couplings that slide or elastomeric couplings that flex a non-metallic element, diaphragm couplings perform their function through the elastic bending of these metallic membranes. This fundamental design principle is the source of their key advantages.

 diaphragm couplings

The typical construction consists of two hubs, each attached to a shaft. These hubs are connected to a central spacer, or sometimes directly to each other, by a pack of diaphragms. The diaphragm couplings are meticulously designed to flex in specific directions, allowing them to handle operational challenges without compromising the torque transmission.

A diaphragm coupling consists of at least one diaphragm and two bushings. The diaphragm is fastened to the bushings with pins, generally preventing loosening or backlash between the diaphragm and bushings. Some manufacturers offer couplings with two diaphragms, while others offer couplings with three diaphragms, with one or two rigid elements in the middle, and the two ends connected to the bushings. The difference between single-diaphragm and double-diaphragm couplings lies in their ability to handle various misalignments. Because single-diaphragm couplings require complex bending of the diaphragm, they are less suitable for eccentricity. Double-diaphragm couplings, on the other hand, can bend in different directions simultaneously to compensate for eccentricity.

Diaphragm couplings are generally used in several categories:

1. General Machinery: Pumps, fans, compressors, etc.

2. Heavy and Special Machinery: Petroleum machinery, chemical machinery, mining machinery, metallurgical machinery, rolling mill equipment, generator sets, etc.

3. Precision Control Systems: High-precision transmission devices such as servo motors and stepper motors; their zero-backlash and zero-rotational-backlash characteristics make them ideal for high-precision positioning.

4. Aviation and Marine Engineering: High-speed power transmission systems for aircraft (such as helicopters) and ships.

5. Printing and Textile Engineering: Printing machinery, textile machinery, etc.
